This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
